Chicago mezzo-soprano Lauryn Nelson is rapidly garnering attention for a voice with a uniquely rich, alto tone. Ms. Nelson recently received her Master of Music degree in vocal performance from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. Lauryn is the 2023 National Opera Association’s Legacy Award winner for her work in their Carolyn Bailey Argento Vocal Competition, as well as the winner of the Farwell Trust award from the Musician’s Club of Women competition. Ms. Nelson recently finished her stint as an apprentice artist with Sarasota Opera, covering the role of Mercedes in Bizet’s Carmen, a role she is so excited to bring to the Florentine Opera stage in the 24/25 season as well. Recent performances for Ms. Nelson include her role debuts as Mrs.Nolan in Menotti’s The Medium and the Singer in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut with The Opera Festival of Chicago. Other recent roles include Grimgerde in Wagner’s Die Walküre in Tundi Productions’ summer festival “Wagner in Vermont,” The Medium in Christopher Cerrone’s new opera In a Grove, 2nd Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, and Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina. Lauryn made her debut with the North Shore Choral Society last winter, performing as the alto soloist in Vivaldi’s Gloria. She also went on tour as a featured singer with The Adrian Dunn Singers, a gospel choir. Lauryn expresses excitement and gratitude for her upcoming season here with the Opera Festival of Chicago. Her artistry, marked by a rich and diverse repertoire with a special focus on Black storytelling, continues to captivate and solidify her position as a rising star in the world of opera.
